Oral Cancer Exam & Screening

Oral cancer screenings look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in your mouth.  An oral cancer screening is a painless examination performed by your dental professional. While the exam can’t detect all cancers, they often provide early detection prior to noticeable symptoms. Cancer detected at an early stage is easier to treat.

Oral Cancers commonly occur in or on the following:

  • Lips
  • Mouth
  • Tongue
  • Salivary Gland
  • Throat (Oropharyngeal Region)
  • Gums
  • Face

Factors that may increase your risk of oral cancer include:

  • Tobacco use of any kind.
  • Previous oral cancer
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Significant sun exposure which can increase lip cancer
  • Exposure to HPV, human papillomavirus, infection
